The North Shore Striders Invite You to the Second Annual Get The Kinks Out Fun Run – June 23, 2013!

Finishing a 5K, half marathon or marathon is a triumphant experience. Along with the triumph, however, comes a few aches and pains from challenging your body to the fullest. The North Shore Striders (NSS) invite you to begin your post-race recovery by joining them for the second annual Get The Kinks Out Fun Run on Sunday, June 23 at 9 a.m. in the Fitger’s Inn Courtyard (600 E. Superior Street). It is free and open to all whether you participate in a Grandma’s Marathon race or not.

The event will kick-off with a few words from Doug Kurtis, world record holder for the most career sub-2:20 marathons (76) and most marathon victories (40), including Grandma’s Marathon victories in 1989 and 1993. Doug will then lead the group down to the beautiful Lakewalk for a short fun run to help “get the kinks out”. The run will end back at Fitger’s where food and refreshments will be available along with a great opportunity to mingle with fellow runners and share stories about your journey to the finish line.

“Grandma’s Marathon weekend is an extremely important part of our club’s history, and we’re excited to host this event to support all of the runners who participate,” said Clint Agar, president of the North Shore Striders.

The club originally started in 1968 as a competitive track and road racing organization, and included legendary runner, Garry Bjorklund, a 1976 10,000 meter Olympian and two-time Grandma’s Marathon champion. In August 1976, the NSS decided to host an official marathon along the north shore of Lake Superior. On June 25, 1977 Grandma’s Marathon was born, forever rooting the NSS’s legacy in the upper Midwest.

Today, the club is governed by an 11-person board of directors and has a membership of 170 people.

“We are a running club for everybody, whether you’re just starting out or you’re competing at an elite level; whether you are training for a race or just like to run recreationally. Our main goal is to create a community for people that share the same passion for running and leading a healthy lifestyle,” said Agar.

Annual membership fees for the NSS are $20 for individuals and $30 for families. The NSS currently offers weekly group runs for all ages and abilities, and has an Elite Runner Support program. Additional programs and events are in the works.
